dc.description.abstract | Advances in pharmaceutical industries have an impact on increasing the type and number of pharmaceutical products circulating in the community. However, not all pharmaceutical products are used rationally, causing the remaining drugs to become expired. Drug waste can pollute the environment if not managed properly. The purpose of this study is to review the management and regulation of waste drugs and expired drugs in households. This research was conducted in Padang Pariaman district using a mixed methods approach to 148 respondents and 6 informants. Based on the results of the study, more than half of respondents had leftover drugs at home (63.5%) with the main reason due to health conditions improved (61.7%). Many residual drug sources come from prescriptions and the most common types of drugs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Nearly half of respondents dumped the leftover medicine in a household garbage (41.5%). Information about the proper drug disposal practices had not been obtained by most respondents (70.3%). About 68.2% of respondents unaware that improperly disposing of drugs can cause environmental damage and harm public health. Therefore, local government should be encouraged to promote the proper drug disposal and enact regulations on the management of waste drugs at home. | en_US |
