Abstract: Acute kidney injury is a disease that has a high risk of causing critical illness to death and requiring rapid diagnosis in its treatment. Currently, the detection of acute kidney injury is still limited and has not been done specifically to become a fast and precise biomarker standard. Neutrophil gelatinase-related lipocalin (NGAL) is a 25 kDa lipocalin protein found in renal and hepatic epithelial cells. NGAL can respond to damage to renal tubular epithelial cells, crises with NGAL in urine and plasma. The purpose of this review article is to demonstrate that NGAL can be used as a marker for rapid, sensitive, and specific acute kidney injury. The method used in the review of this article uses a search through PubMed®database. The results of the research that have been done show that NGAL can overcome acute kidney injury 2 to 12 hours faster, has a higher sensitivity and specificity than other clinical diagnosis measurement standards. So that NGAL can be used as acute kidney injury quickly, with high sensitivity and specificity.
