Effects of One-Month Baby Massage by Mothers on Autonomic Nervous System Function and Growth Development of 4- and 5-Month-Old Infants

Title: Effects of One-Month Baby Massage by Mothers on Autonomic Nervous System Function and Growth Development of 4- and 5-Month-Old Infants
Authors: Tanaka, Yayoi; Watanabe, Hiroko
Abstract: ABSTRACT
Background: Massage has been practiced since around 3 months of age for the purpose of
interacting with children, but there are few reports on its ongoing effectiveness, no unified views,
and few reports on growth and development.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of massage given by mothers to
their 3-month-old infants based on autonomic activity and growth development of 4- and 5-
month-old infants one month later.
Methods: The subjects were healthy 3-month-old infants and their mothers who were born as
full-term, singleton babies. The study design was an inequivalent control group design: 25
mother-child pairs were massaged for one month and 12 mother-child pairs were not massaged.
Data were collected twice, once on the first day at 3 months of age and one month later. As
indicators of autonomic nervous system activity, axillary temperature before and after massage,
heart rate and heart rate variability during massage were measured. As an indicator of growth,
body weight was measured after the massage. As an indicator of development, mothers were
asked to respond to a questionnaire (KIDS). The axillary temperature, rate of change in heart rate
and heart rate variability, and KIDS scores were compared on the first day and one month later.
Results: Axillary temperature and LF/HF ratio of children at 1 month were significantly lower
after massage (p<0.05). Overall developmental age and expressive language domain of KIDS at
1 month were more developmental than in the non-massage group (p<0.05). Heart rate and HF
were not significantly different after 1 month.
Conclusion: It was found that when children received massage from their mothers for one-month,
cardiac sympathetic nerve function was suppressed and the development of expressive language
skills was promoted.

Title: Determinants of Long-acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) Use among Women of Reproductive Age in Indonesia: 2017 IDHS Data Analysis
Authors: Kurniatin, Lydia Febri; Marsita, Elma; Nugroho, Darojad Nurjono Agung
Abstract: Background: The achievement of active Long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC)
participants for West Kalimantan Province was only 9.54% in 2019 and it has not meet
with the main performance target in the Strategic Plan (2015-2019) 15.19%. Research
Objectives: To analyze the determinants of the use of LARC by women of reproductive
age in West Kalimantan based on the results of the 2017 IDHS data analysis. Research
Method: Analytical research with cross-sectional research design and using data from the
2017 IDHS in West Kalimantan. The research sample was all women of reproductive age aged
15-49 years in West Kalimantan who were using contraception, namely 501 respondents.
Results: Bivariate analysis illustrates that there is a correlation between age (p value = 0.008),
education level (p value = 0.002), parity (p value = 0.009), place of residence (p value = 0.005,
economic status (p value = 0.000), and internet access with the status of LARC usage by women
of reproductive age in West Kalimantan (p value = 0.000). Other results concluded that there
was no relationship between the variables of work (p value = 0.3), knowledge (p value =
0.674), distance to health services (p value = 0.2 ), health promotion by health workers
(p value = 0.478), spousal support (p value = 0.8) and the variable number of wanted
children with the status of women of reproductive age using LARC in West Kalimantan
(p value = 0.173). Conclusion: There is a need to increase education and reach of
contraceptive services for husbands by conduction collaborative works with public
figure, religious leaders and women's organizations in carrying out health promotions
about contraception in various public facilities.

Sexual and Reproductive Health of Rohingya Refugee People In Bangladesh: A Systematic Review Protocol

Title: Sexual and Reproductive Health of Rohingya Refugee People In Bangladesh: A Systematic Review Protocol
Authors: Hossain, Muhammad Anwar; Sawleshwarkar, Shailendra; ZablotskaManos, Iryna
Abstract: Background and Objective: Rohingya refugees are one of the most vulnerable
population groups from any perspective, and that certainly includes their sexual and
reproductive health and access to appropriate services. This review synthesizes SRH status and
needs of Rohingya women of reproductive age, addressing their experiences in accessing
services.
Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, this review employs quality assessment tools
(Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, MMAT, Cochrane Risk of Bias). The search strategy will be
comprehensive, spanning prominent databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of
Science, and Scopus. Additionally, a diligent search will extend to gray literature, reference
lists, and citations. Synthesis: Employing a narrative synthesis approach, the data synthesis will
encompass three critical domains: the SRH status and needs of Rohingya women, the barriers
encountered in accessing SRH services, and the effectiveness of existing SRH interventions.
Results: The review seeks to provide valuable insights for policymakers and healthcare
practitioners, offering a foundation for evidence-based strategies aimed at advancing SRH
outcomes among Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and similar Asian contexts. The
review is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023444386) for transparency and
efficiency.
Conclusion: Have been made to address the health and humanitarian needs of Rohingya
refugees in Bangladesh, there is still limited knowledge about their SRH.
